Cholesterol
Checking cholesterol
We are familiar with blood tests for cholesterol levels. They measure LDL, HDL and triglyceride levels, and result in an overall number or index (Total Cholesterol). The way the index is calculated varies from country to country.

Most people who get regular check-ups know what their cholesterol level is, and if they are in the “high-normal” or “elevated” ranges, have probably discussed their risk factors with their physician. The known risk factors are age, diet and weight, exercise, smoking, and hereditary predisposition.

Some factors you can’t control:
  • heredity— you inherit a tendency toward elevated cholesterol from your parents
  • gender— men have somewhat higher total cholesterol, lower HDL than women
  • age— studies indicate total cholesterol and LDL increase with age
Some factors you can control:
  • diet— calories plus fat equals cholesterol
  • weight— weight loss results in improved cholesterol counts
  • exercise— burns off the fat, and fat includes cholesterol
  • smoking— negatively alters the way your body metabolises cholesterol

Of these factors, diet and exercise are the easiest to manage. A natural cholesterol lowering dietary supplement such as HEP-40 can boost the effect of life style improvements. How? —by further lowering the bad cholesterol and helping avoid prescription drug therapy, which once started, tends to be for life.
